Hill Spring to Calgary in Alberta

July 4, 2013

We left Hill Spring this morning for our drive to Calgary (150 mi.) with two intermediate stops. Our first was in the Town of Fort MacLeod, AB to visit the historic Northwest Mounted Police Museum and Fort. The site was established in 1873 and was the first Canadian law enforcement organization in western Canada. The Fort is restored and tells the RCMP story for western Canada. We enjoyed a performance  the NWMP Youth Music Ride which included 8 talented horsewomen.

Our second stop was the Bomber Command Lancaster Museum in Nanton, AB. I got my first up close and personal look at the British Lancaster and Blenheim bombers of WWII fame. This is the Museum commemorating Canadian Bomber Command famous exploits in WWII that included the “Dambusters,” the “Great Escape,” and sinking the German battleship Tirpitz. The Lancaster is being restored to “taxi” condition. At least two of the Merlins run, the other two are being restored.

Tonight we celebrated the 4th of July in Calgary with an old fashioned cook-out courtesy of our Wagonmasters and Tail Enders. Tomorrow starts early at 0715 for 3 days of intense activity with the Stampede and Calgary.

Oh, by the way Mary Lou, we are still in the prairie a week later. I thought you said it was only 400 miles?  J

 Will add pictures later.

 “Big Sky Country”…YES!!!
