Jeep Trip on Denali Highway

August 3, 2013

After two early wakeup calls it was sleep in time, also laundry. We did do a brief trip down To Denali NP Visitors Center. The new one is really nice and we also found our 30% Club Pins that we qualified for by actually seeing the mountain. Last trip in 1989 we saw only the south face, this time only the north face as Denali showed herself only the one day we were in the park.

Tonight a group of us rented jeep for a tour up the old Denali Highway (AK 8). This is another gravel road that used to be the only road access to Denali until the early 1970’s when the Parks Highway (AK-3) was completed. We drove about 45 miles up the road. Beautiful views even though we had some rain and clouds. We hoped to see moose, but no luck as all we saw was one beaver and one porcupine that our guide treed so photos could be taken. It was still a fun drive.

The beaver...and not the least bit afraid of us.
