Going Fishing for Halibut

August 7, 2013

Another early start to the day was for me only. We were heading out by 5:30 am and on the dock by 6:00am. The boat departed at 6:30am for our 1 ½ hour cruise to the fishing grounds. As we left the weather was so-so. By the time we dropped lines there was light rain but no wind and reasonably calm seas. Twenty of our group went fishing. We caught our first halibut as our mate demonstrated how to do it. Ron was closest so he got the first keeper. I got my first about 15 minutes later. Numbers 2-4 weren’t too big so they went back to grow up. Number 5 wasn’t any bigger but my arms were not up to cranking in another one from 80’ with 2lbs of lead plus fish. The boat limited out in about 2 ½ hours. Everyone got their two halibut. We were back at the dock by 1:30PM and I was home and locked out by 2 PM. We had our fillets packed and frozen to bring home.
