Valemount to Revelstoke, BC – A Beautiful 320 mile Drive
Surrounded By Mountains
September 4, 2013
OK, the mountains were all around us but we were driving on
the valley floor along the North Thompson River and got great gas mileage. One
interesting spot was around Barriere. We saw a number of fields with raised bed
(6-8”) growing areas covered by what looked like landscape cloth suspended
overhead shading the ground. We stopped at a local fresh fruit and vegetable stand
to re-stock. There was also a major fire in this area that totally incinerated
everything. As we found out it happened 10 years ago and stuff is just
beginning to regrow.

We just skirted the edge of Kamloops which is a pretty big
town/city. That area is hot and dry in summer and look like typical California
countryside in summer. As we headed to Revelstoke the mountains became bigger
again and it looks a lot like Stewart with forests, big mountains, glacial rivers,
lakes, and glaciers. We also found the spot (Craigellachie, BC) where the "Golden Spike was driven connecting east and west in Canada. Keeping with family railroad customs we stopped. It was worth it and it even had a very interesting gift shop for train buffs...Sue and Cathy take note. Little Walter will like that we stopped here. Revelstoke is definitely a Winter sports mecca and is the site
of the first ski jump in North America.
Oh yeah, what were they growing? Ginseng! It likes heat but
cannot tolerate direct sunlight! My guess was strawberries.
